There is no shortage of pills and supplements that promise everlasting thinness. But in the quest for weight loss, promises often appear much larger than what reality delivers.

Advertisements claiming quick weight loss with little or no work have flooded the Internet and vitamin aisles. Testimonials and free inquiry offers lure you in, often taking your credit card with them. But beware: the only thing you will lose is money, not weight.

The FDA steps in

Not only can supplements rob your purse, they can also be downright dangerous.

In December 2008, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned people not to buy or consume 28 novel products marketed for weight loss. Since that time, they have identified 41 more tainted weight loss products that may put your robustness at risk.

A 1994 law allows the FDA to remove a dietary supplement from the market if the product harms people. This is what happened with ephedra, a commonplace weight loss herb. Hundreds of reports were sent to the FDA about ephedra's dangers, including effects on the tense system and heart. Hundreds of consumers were also hurt by the herb, including some deaths. The FDA finally took the unusual begin of banning all ephedra products from the market.
