Dave was always heavy.

Then about 15 years ago, he said, he got really fat. Morbidly obese, 367 pounds at the worst of it, depressed, borderline diabetic, needing medicine for his blood pressure and a mask and machine at night for his sleep apnea.

Most days he was afraid he'd die before his son's high school graduation. He lived like that for five years.

Darlene used to be skinny.

She put on a few pounds when she quit her two-pack-a-day habit. After rheumatoid arthritis made movement painful, the weight piled up faster, and the extra heft further strained her joints, making her want to move even less.
